According to the CSIA, a flue lining is designed to protect the house from heat transfer to combustibles, protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion, and to provide a correctly sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances.” The flue lining can be made of clay tiles, metal tubes, or cast-in-place liners, each of which have advantages and disadvantages for any given chimney design.
